Here’s this weeks blog.
Improving teaching and assessment
Our second priority this year and an important one. At the heart of what we do is making sure that the quality of teaching and assessment is good across the whole school. Kate Andrews, ERW
maths advisory teacher has been sharing a wide range of practical strategies for division with Class 2 this week. We’ve also welcomed our school Challenge Adviser, Mark Austin, to see the progress we are making in this recommendation.
I was lucky enough to learn more about effective Foundation Phase (Our youngest learners to Year 2) practice at the Pembrokeshire Headteacher Meeting this week in Haverfordwest. Schools such as The Meads, Wolfscastle and Golden Grove shared some of the best practice that goes on in their schools. Staff from Coastlands hope to visit some of these settings shortly to continue developing a practical, hands-on and child-led approach to learning in our school.
This is our fifth recommendation and one that caused some concern for our staff and pupil leadership teams this week .Our attendance for December was published, leaving us at 87% attendance. This leaves us 8% under our target. Our attendance has dropped over the last three months, now leaving us with the second lowest attendance in Pembrokeshire.
In part, illness and a larger part term-time holidays. I simply wish to say that the inspectorate have left a recommendation that we must improve attendance based on last year. We have to address this. The school council have been brilliant and made a number of great suggestions. Expect a report to appear here next week about their next steps. Our school is so lucky to have such creative, honest, but fair children representing their school.
But – the good news – This week, based on the suggestion of a school council member, the winning year groups – Nursery and Reception – have a choice of treats from a list. A list we hope to make larger through the term. They achieved 100% attendance this week. Year Five were hot on their heels with 99.2% attendance this week!!
Also we handed out over 80 “Golden Stickers” for full attendance this week. Well done. Remember, today starts your next chance for a prize or sticker.
ALSO, we had a raffle for a £5 voucher to use at our book fair next week. The winners were:
Nursery – Heidi
Class 1- Eva
Class 2 – Ieuan
Class 3 – Caitlyn
Don’t forget, our book fair starts on Monday until Friday. Scholastic haven’t really pushed the boat out on leaflets, but the children will get a chance to have a look at the fair once it arrives Monday. Also, if stock runs out, we’ve been told that we can get the books to arrive next week on Monday or Tuesday, so no-one misses out on the most popular titles. Every book sold is a book for the school too.
Speaking of books, author Jackie Morris will visit us next week. All children will get to meet her in assembly time and she will then be working with Class 3. If you wish to purchase / bring one of her books for her to sign, please send it in with your child. (This applies to all children.)
Diolch for your continued support at the school to every pupil, parent and family member. Have a great weekend.
